The Professional Journal
„Lactation and Breastfeeding“ [„Laktation und Stillen“]

Most publications and professional journals are written in English. In Europe the first IBCLC Lactation Consultants were German-speaking. Even today German-speakers make up the largest number of IBCLCs. After the establishment of the association, VELB decided to publish this as the association journal in order to give German-speaking members the possibility of broadening their education with a professional journal.

History:

Im February 1988 the predecessor to today’s „Laktation und Stillen“ appeared for the first time under the simple name of “Newsletter”. Shortly afterwards the newsletter was renamed: Breastfeeding News: Professional Journal for Breastfeeding and Lactation Counseling” Responsible for this first German language professional publication on breastfeeding and lactation counseling was Erika Nehlsen, IBCLC.

With the first issue in 1995 Madeleine Lehmann-Buri, IBCLC took over as Editor-in-Chief. “Breastfeeding News” became “Lactation and Breastfeeding” with a new layout and significantly more pages. Senior colleagues will remember the title page with antique sculptures.

The current team took over the professional journal in 2002. Meanwhile the rubric “journal” has become a sub-area of VELB.

Right from the start the journal was the journal of the Association of European Lactation Consultants, but at the same time pages of information about the affiliated German speaking national associations were also included.

In the front editorial section professional articles on breastfeeding knowledge and other interesting related topic areas can be found.

Our journal has been, for many years, an important source of information for IBCLC Lactation Consultants, for nurses, midwives and physicians but also for hospitals, parent counselors as well as professional schools in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the German-speaking areas of Italy.

For members of the affiliated national associations a subscription is available in the (increased) membership feed. Members in non-German speaking countries can also get the journal on request.
If you are interested in having a look at the journal you can get it as an individual subscriber. Or click on this page

Currently it is not possible for us to publish the professional journal in English. However membership in VELB also automatically means membership in ILCA (Link). Through ILCA you can subscribe to the English language journal, “Journal of Human Lactation”.
